Welcome, brothers and sisters, and peace be with you. May the words on my lips and the meditations in our hearts. Be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, our strength and our redeemer. Amen. The Mediterranean Sea is often pictured as a place of breathtaking beauty. Holiday brochures show sparkling blue water, quiet fishing villages, and gentle sailing boats gliding beneath clear blue skies. However, anyone familiar with its history knows that the Mediterranean has another side. Sudden winds, violent storms. They have claimed countless ships over the centuries. One of the most famous storms ever recorded on those waters is found in the Book of Acts. The Apostle Paul was being taken as a prisoner to Rome when his ship was caught in a fierce gale for fourteen long days. The storm raged without mercy. The sailors threw their cargo overboard. They tossed the ship's equipment into the sea. And eventually Luke tells us all hope of our being saved was at last abandoned. Yet while everyone else was overwhelmed with fear, Paul stood before the exhausted crew with remarkable confidence. Why? Because the night before God had spoken to him. Paul could say Take courage not because the storm had ended, but because he knew that God had not abandoned them. The waves were still crashing, the wind was still howling, but God's presence was greater than the storm. Many years before Paul and he was facing a terrifying voyage, another group of frightened believers found themselves battling the wind and the waves. This time the storm was on the Sea of Galilee. They too believed that they might not survive the night. They too needed to hear words of courage. However, instead of sending a message through an angel, God came to them in person. Jesus walked on the raging water and said Take heart, it is I. Do not be afraid. Today's gospel, Matthew chapter fourteen, verses twenty two to thirty three, reminds us that the greatest miracle is not simply that Jesus walked on the water, it is that he came to his frightened people in the middle of the storm, and the same Lord still comes to his people today, not always to remove every storm, but always to give us in his presence, his peace and his saving hand. You know the disciples have already experienced an extraordinary day. They had watched Jesus feed more than five thousand people with only five loaves and two fish. Surely their faith must have been soaring. Yet Jesus immediately sends them into another lesson. He tells them, get into a boat, cross the lake, while he goes up a mountain alone to pray. On the lake, the storm hits, not as a result of any disobedience, but because they were exactly where they were supposed to be. Sometimes we imagine that following Christ guarantees smooth sailing. The gospel tells us otherwise. Faithfulness does not exempt us from storms. Good people lose jobs. Faithful Christians are struck by illness. Loving families experience heartbreak. Faith communities face uncertainty. Even when we are doing God's will, the storms can rise and be against us. Matthew tells us the boat was battered by the waves because the wind was against it. Many of us know exactly what that feels like. Perhaps the wind that is against us is grief, anxiety, loneliness, illness, uncertainty about the future, concern for our children or grandchildren. Sometimes life simply feels as though we are rowing with all our strength, but getting nowhere. The disciples had been struggling for hours. Then during the darkest part of the night Jesus came. Not immediately, not when they first wanted him, but exactly the right time. And God's timing is often so different from ours. The disciples thought they were alone. They were not. They thought Jesus was absent. He was already coming towards them. The same is true for us. There are moments when heaven seems silent. Our prayers seem unanswered. We wonder if God has forgotten us. Yet the promise of Scripture is that Christ never abandons his people. Even when we cannot see him, he sees us. Even when we cannot hear him, he is already on his way. Now, the disciples do not recognise Jesus, they think he's a ghost. Fear has a remarkable ability to distort reality. When we are frightened, we often imagine the worst. A small problem becomes a disaster. An uncertain future becomes a hopeless road. A delay becomes abandonment. Fear changes our perspective. And then comes one of the most comforting sentences in the whole Bible, as Jesus says, Take heart. It is I. Do not be afraid. Jesus does not begin by calming the sea. He first calms his disciples. His greatest gift is not always the removal of the storm, it is his presence within the storm. I always cling to the flow in this part of the gospels. First comes human doubt, worry and panic. Then comes his presence. Then comes the peace of Christ. Sometimes we expect God to remove every storm before we trust him. In reality, Jesus often teaches us to trust him before the storm ends. This gospel concludes with the disciples worshipping Jesus and saying, Truly, you are the Son of God. Notice here how the storm has become sort of a classroom in which their faith grew. Without the storm, they might never have discovered who Jesus really is. Looking back over our own lives, many of us could say the same. The hardest chapters often become the moments when we learn to trust God most deeply. The storm did not destroy our faith, it refined it. So to close, let us not be surprised by the storms of life. Being a disciple does not mean life will always be easy. But we must remember that Jesus sees us even when we think we are alone. Certainly, our lives will encounter rough seas. Some of us may already be in the middle of one this very day. But our hope is not found in calm waters. Our hope is found in the one who is with us in the storms. So whatever waves may arise for you today, this week, in the future, know that Jesus is with you. For the one who walked on the water and says, Take courage, take heart is the same Lord who walks beside us today, and his presence has never failed those who trust in him.
